She joins the ranks with Chicago's legendary Mavis Staples, Memphis' Denise LaSalle, and New Orleans' Irma Thomas with this nomination. Monica hailed from Chicago where she cut her teeth singing Gospel, R&B, and Soul between Detroit, Chicago and her hometown - Gary, Indiana. Now, a Bay Area resident, Sista Monica is admired and sought after by festival promoters, corporations, and event planners worldwide. In 2007, she and her band performed festivals in Sweden, Italy, Calgary, and The Mexican Riviera on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. On the cruise, she joined her blues friends Taj Mahal, Marsha Ball, Tommy Castro, Bobby Rush and Elvin Bishop.
Monica is not only an accomplished artist. She is also a community leader, spear-heading events raising thousands of dollars for the victims of the Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. She considers herself a soul-survivor and true testament to the power of hope, faith and music as a universal language. She, herself survived an aggressive battle of cancer under her right arm in 2003. She is still singing, dancing and rejoicing at major festivals, special events, weddings, and private parties.
Sista Monica returns to Santa Cruz with her touring and recording band – veterans Danny B., - piano and organ, Donnie Caruth - guitar, Doug Rowan - tenor saxophone, Paul Jones - funky bass, David Tucker - drums and Tammy Brown on background vocals.
